ISSUE 4

SUBMISSIONS

Kia ora everyone!

Thanks so much for your interest in contributing to Newzician Mag Issue 4! Below you’ll find a bunch of info about us, the mag, and the submission process. As well as where to contact us if you need anything.

About Newzician Magazine

If you’re reading this, I am assuming you have some idea of who we are and what we do, but I’ll give a bit of an overview regardless.

Newzician was founded by three friends–Sam, Flynn and Rosa– who all bonded over going to gigs and getting stuck into the music scene in Ōtepoti Dunedin while at university. We felt there was a real lack of Aotearoa-focused music media and journalism and wanted to create a place to showcase and celebrate all the amazing stuff happening in our backyard.

Our aim is to highlight Aotearoa musicians (of course) as well as the many adjacent people and places that make the scene thrive. We are interested in exploring these themes deeply and the context in which they exist.

Issue 4 Theme

YOUR ROOTS ARE WHERE YOU PLANT THEM.

Thinking about Issue 4 led us all to the same theme; community. How the energy you sow into people and places is reaped. How the ways we invest our time shape who we are. How the time we put into our surroundings grows thriving relationships, scenes, and enriches ourselves. We want to zoom in on how we define “home” by ourselves, with our close friends, with collaborators and within our creative pursuits. Community can be big or small.

This issue, we are running things slightly differently. In the past we have worked very collaboratively with contributors during our curation but this time we decided to create a theme to help guide the submissions from the beginning instead of retrospectively. You are welcome to interpret this theme however you like!

A reminder that the print magazine will not come out for approximately 4 months from the submission deadline so the story must be not overly time sensitive.

Submissions

Please submit through the Google Form on this page! OR email rosa@newzician.co.nz with the subject ‘Submission – Issue 4’.

What you can submit

  • Finished piece: Words, visuals or a combo of both!

  • Really strong pitch with a thought out plan to make it happen.
If you are submitting a pitch we need an indication of how it will happen within the deadlines. We have been very flexible in the past, but unfortunately we do not have time this time around so things must be done! <3

If you want to chat to us about a pitch before the submission deadline please email rosa@newzician.co.nz

You do not have to be an experienced writer to submit something. We are open to anyone! But, we want to publish good, interesting pieces. We are happy to offer feedback and editorial insight, or chat to you about your piece if you want to work through anything.

We do not have a particular writing style. Write however feels most natural.

We are open to any kind of piece! For writing it can be a feature, q&a, poem, thoughts/feelings/musings, playlist etc etc. For visuals, we love photography, illustration, comic, collage… the list goes on. Think outside the box if you so choose! A mix of both is also encouraged if you would like to collaborate.

Word Count

Maximum word count 2500, no minimum!

Editorial Oversight

If your piece gets picked we may have some feedback and edits in order to work with the magazine as a printed publication and with the other pieces. We ask that you please turn these edits around in the time that we need. At this point we imagine it will be about 2 weeks from notification (tbc).

Contributor Payment

We are still working on acquiring funding or coming up with a plan to fund the printing of the mag and pay contributors. At the moment we unfortunately cannot guarantee any payment, however we hope this will change.

We do not take your contributions for granted and know how much work goes into every piece! You will obviously get a copy of the magazine when we release it, and we will keep you updated with the latest information.

Deadlines

Submission due EOD Sunday 11 May.

Edits due 2 weeks from notification.

If you don’t get picked…

It’s probably not because the piece is bad! We only have limited space in the mag and want to create a balanced experience so unfortunately not everything can go in. There may be an opportunity for us to publish on our website though!
